On the Music in the Five Dynasties of the Period of The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms is a relatively special period. From the point of view of the history of social development,it is the intermediate zone of the Tang and Song dynasties;from the point of view of the history of musical development,it is the transitional period from the medieval Jiyue era, which was concerned on the music and dance during the Sui and Tang Dynasties,to the later secular music era, which was represented by traditional Chinese dramas.Although this period was short, due to social political, economic, cultural and religious influences, the music in this period has distinctive characteristics of the era. With the major changes in the social structure of the Five Dynasties period, the aesthetic interests and aesthetic level of the mainstream social groups changed significantly, which led to the prevalence of vulgar and secular music,as well as the convergence of the development of music in both the court and the public. This may be the fundamental reason why the music development in the Five Dynasties period was characteris-tic and it also marked the advent of the era of secular music in history.
