Embedded Intervention:Another Possibility of Design Intervention in Traditional Handicraft from the Perspective of Craftsman Subjectivity
As a key variable, the subjectivity of craftsmen is closely related to the balance between tradition and innovation in traditional handicraft design practice, profoundly affecting the trajectory of design interven-tion.Embedded intervention is a new intervention approach proposed to unleash the creative vitality of crafts-men.Traditional intervention approaches exhibit characteristics of external intervention so that it relies on designers as intervention mediators and it leverages the relationship between designers and craftsmen to pro-mote the participation of craftsmen in design, thus, the effectiveness is subject to uncertainties due to power dynamics between the two parties.Multidimensional artistic practices with craftsmen as design intervention mediators demonstrate that, the embedded intervention, which is driven by craftsmen with modern design knowledge, relies on their intrinsic knowledge fusion and transformation as the core driving force, and it is characterized by"single-core drive,multi-subject collaboration"in the relationship network;therefore,it can effectively avoid the risk of marginalization of craftsmen in the design intervention process. This not only provides a self-determined solution for balancing tradition and innovation in traditional handicraft de-sign practice but also offers an opportunity for traditional handicrafts to move towards autonomous innovative design. However, issues such as limited scale, immature construction of relationship networks, and the rela-tionship between embedded intervention and OEM and collaborative design models still need further effortsin terms of policy, practical, and research so as to promote the development of embedded intervention as a ma-ture approach for traditional handicrafts innovative designs.
