Five Theoretical Issues in Regional and National Music Studies
The establishment of the first-level discipline of regional and national studies has attracted signif-icant attention across various fields of humanities and social sciences. Some ethnomusicologists have begun to approach the study of music from the perspective of regional and national studies, focusing on areas such as overseas Chinese music, world ethnic music,cross-boundary ethnic music, and overseas music ethnogra-phy.This new interdisciplinary field aims to explore"beyond the border"of China. However,as a novel re-search domain, regional and national music studies require further analysis in terms of conceptual under-standing,research goals, subject perspectives, knowledge construction, and research methodologies. This paper addresses five key theoretical issues:How to identify the conceptual origins of regional and national music studies? What are the goals and demands of this research? How to understand the issue of Chinese cul-tural subjectivity in this field? How to comprehend knowledge construction in regional and national music studies? How to reconstruct the methodology of this research area?
