Style,Painting Flavor and the Reconstruction of Painting History:James Cahill and the Study of Chinese Art History
James Cahill is a pioneer in the study of Chinese art history overseas.Based on the assumption that"style is a concept",he has created a new research paradigm by integrating art history, social history, history of thoughts and cultural history. He emphasized the"visual proposition"and advocated the analysis of pictorial materials.Through an in-depth study of late Ming paintings,he reconstructed the history of sev-enteenth-century Chinese paintings and challenged the limitations of the traditional history of paintings.James Cahill also placed art within the framework of social history, scrutinizing the generative mechanism of artistic styles from the perspectives of social, political, economic and other external factors, openinga new methodology for the study of the social history of art.His research not only expands the scope of Chinese art history, but also provides a theoretical dimension for overseas research on Chinese art history which is quite different from that of Western art historiography since the Renaissance.
