An Examination of the Performance Market during the Formative Period of Shanghai Peking Opera in the Late Qing Dynasty:A Study on the Dynamics of the Spatial Aggregation of Shanghai Peking Opera Gardens
Peking Opera broke the spatial and temporal pattern of traditional Chinese opera's distribution and evolution soon after its development in Beijing,and went south to Shanghai in 1867,where it was immersed in the urban entertainment ecosystem and aesthetic style to nurture the Shanghai Peking Opera and formed a prosperous performance market.The spatial concentration of Peking opera theaters was obvious then.Popu-lation size and demographic structure,location advantages and urban infrastructure,the special management system of the Concession and other urban entertainment environment constituted the external dynamics and elemental conditions for the spatial agglomeration of Beijing-style theaters.The business model of the inte-grated troupe and garden,the product innovation of repertoire types and stage layout,and the synergistic competition of the related entertainment industry interact with each other,all reinforced the mechanism of spatial agglomeration of the Beijing-style theaters.The commercial and aesthetic features of the Shanghai Peking opera werethus gradually formed.The Shanghai Peking Opera is the result of pragmatism and hedon-ism in the context of the convergence of Chinese and Western cultures,which impacted the traditional con-cept of performance,and at the same time,exerted a far-reaching influence on local operasthat have been active in Shanghai since then.
