Articulatory Mechanisms of Consonant Clusters in the Uyghur Language
In this paper, the authors study the Uyghur syllable-final consonant clusters based on the corpus of electropalatography(EPG).The research shows that there is an inherent hierarchical relationship in terms of manners and places of articulation of consonants forming the clusters. That is,the dorsal and fricative consonants are subjected to a higher degree of articulatory constraints and are not easily affected by surrounding consonants, while the apical and plosive consonants are subjected to the lowest articulatory constraints and are thus easily affected by surrounding consonants. There are three kinds of gestural adaptation mechanisms of consonant clusters, namely, coarticulation, blending as well as assimilation. These mechanisms are restricted by articulatory constraints in the process of phonetic realization.
