A Quantitative Study of Clauses in Modern Mongolian
This study investigates the validity of clause as a grammatical unit in Modem Mongolian.Based on a corpus of legal, literary, news, and political texts, this paper employs quantitative linguistic methods, specifically the Menzerath-Altmann law and sentence length distribution modeling,to test the hypothesis that a hierarchical structure of"sentence-clause-word"exists in Modem Mongolian. The results confirm this hypothesis, demonstrating the presence of clause as a distinct level within the Mongolian grammatical system.Additionally,in Modem Mongolian, the probability distribution of sentence length measured by the number of clauses conforms to the extended positive-negative binomial model.
