On The Meaning of zhugs-long-dmar-po and Its Related Issues in the Old Tibetan Document P.T.1288 Discovered in Dunhuang
In the old Tibetan document P.T.1288,we have found the special obsolete phrase zhugs-long-dmar-po,which occurs three times. Many scholars have tried to explain the meaning of zhugs-long-dmar-po,but there is no convincing interpretation so far.In this paper, based on Tibetan and Chinese literature and Amdo Tibetan,we discuss the phrase zhugs-long-dmar-po in terms of its phonology, syntax, and semantics as well as related issues from the perspective of historical linguistics. We finally propose that zhugs-long-dmar-po actually means"the beacon tower",which was used for passing on military messages such as enemies'attack alarms.
