Tetrasyllabic Words and Their Typological Features in the Bugeng Language
Tetrasyllabic words consist of an important linguistic unit in the Bugeng language.From the perspective of formal types,the tetrasyllabic words can be classified into seven types:ABAC,AABB,ABCB,ABCC,ABCD,ABAB,and AABC.In terms of prosodic features,the prosodic harmony of tetrasyllabic words is mainly brought over by reduplication.From the perspective of structural composition,the tetrasyllabic words are formed mainly in three ways:reduplication,root-plus-root compounding,and affixation.From the perspective of grammatical meaning,they mainly express emphasis,repetition of action,and distributive meaning.From the perspective of syntactic functions,they can function as various syntactic constituents.Tetrasyllabic words in the Bugeng language have many similarities with those in other Austroasiatic languages,but there are also some differences.Overall,tetrasyllabic words in the Bugeng language show a trend of gradual increasing in number,which may be related to the development of its own language structure and to its borrowing from languages such as Chinese.
