Collective Personal Pronouns in the Jinhe Variety of Nuosu Yi
In this paper,we mainly describe and analyze personal pronouns in the Jinhe variety of Nuosu Yi.Our investigation indicates that there exists a set of collective pronouns in the Jinhe variety referring to someone's family or clan.Such a set of pronouns has long been described as the short or colloquial forms of plural pronouns. However, our investigation shows that the collective pronouns are semantically and morphologically different from plural pronouns in the Jinhe variety.Expanding the scope of our investigation,we find that in addition to Jinhe, this set of collective pronouns exists in some other varieties of several subdialects of Nuosu Yi.We hypothesize that this category of words may have initially been the genitive forms of plural pronouns, which have since undergone reanalysis and develop into collective pronouns, resulting in the forced disappearance of the genitive forms of plural pronouns.
