Philosophical Direction of Chinese Education in the 1930s and its Enlightenment
China witnessed the golden age for the vigorous development of Chinese educational philosophy in the 1920s and 1930s with overseas students majoring in education to return to work due to Dewey's visit to China.A discussion on the development direction of Chinese education was also brewing in the educational circle, following the"East-West cultural debate"during the May Fourth Movement and the debate on science and philosophy of life in the mid-1920s.In 1934,Wu Junsheng published an article"China's Education Needs a Philosophy"in Ta Kung Pao,criticizing Chinese education for putting too much emphasis on"methods"and"systems"while ignoring the"ideals or goals"implied in education for the lack of an educational philosophy. The article triggered a great discussion in which Jiang Qi,Zheng Zonghai,Zhang Junmai,Xu Boshen, and other scholars participated. This discussion reflected the efforts of educational philosophy research from borrowing to creation in those times, and the researchers'pursuit of localization of educational philosophy, effectively fostering the construction of educational philosophy discipline. It was closely linked with then educational development and social reform, thus expanding the social influence of educational philosophy.
