Zhang Pengchun's Pioneering Studies on Reform and Modernization of Chinese Higher Education
This paper considered the transformation of Nankai and Tsinghua from middle schools to universities to be promoted by Zhang Pengchun,an educator who once studied in the United States and then returned to work in these privileged schools in the 1920s.He integrated the established tradition of Nankai into valuing"public interests and students'capabilities"to cultivate modern university spirit through diversified education of"knowledge and personality"to develop Nankai University through the disciplinary construction of humanity,science,and business.Being employed in Tsinghua in charge of teaching affairs,he advocated"cultivating applicable talents and new leading elites for China"by setting up the standard of"real talents".also he committed himself to the founding of academic institutes to stress independent research,therefore promoting the restructuring and development of Tsinghua University.Authors suggested that Zhang's educational philosophy lies in his global perspective on China's educational issues that paved a new way to develop higher education with Chinese characteristics,thus providing good implications for today's pursuit of the modernization of Chinese education.
