Abstract
In the western literary tradition, the tragic literature has been the mainstream, which mainly originates from the artistic tradition in The Old Testament and ancient Greek stories. Here,“John Updike’s tragedy” has two meanings: firstly, Updike upheld this tradition of tragic literature and greatly enhanced his literary status. In his“Rabbit Quartet”, he successfully described Americans’ tragic life within forty years. Secondly, he had one obvious deficiency: he betrayed part of the classical tradition in writing too much sex and weakened his literary status, which forms his own tragedy. Therefore, in the western literary world, the writer’s status is mainly determined by his tragic description and his morality in his works.
