Yu Dafu entered in the May Fourth new literary arena with the image of"decadent literati".After 1923,the"realistic"factor in his literary thought gradually increased.Since the mid-late 1920s,his literary and artistic thought had been swinging between romance and reality, bourgeois literary thought and proletarian literary thought.Until the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japan,he went to Singapore and emerged as a"cultural warrior"in the Singaporean and Malaysian literary circles, where the latter ultimately took precedence.During his time in Southeast Asia,Yu Dafu's creations, political essays, and miscellaneous writings collectively constructed his image as a cultural warrior while also highlighting his temperament as a romantic poet. His traditional-style poems and prose revealed a profound sense of mission in serving politics, yet they also encompassed the thoughts and emotions of a romantic poet. The dual styles and dual emotions in Yu Dafu's works engage in a complex dance of tension, alternation, and collision across different texts, and even within the same text. This intricate interplay ultimately gives birth to a figure who possesses dual spiritual characteristics, embodying the essence of a complex and multifaceted Yu Dafu.
