周作人对两性问题的关注由来已久,早在 1902年江南水师学堂学习时期便有所涉猎.之后到日本留学,对日本、西方的现代性学思想有所了解.1911年回国,1917 年入职北大,周作人此阶段对西学书籍的购置中,已经较多涉猎现代性学著作.1922 年,郁达夫《沉沦》、汪静之《蕙的风》因为涉及性的书写,被批判为"不道德"的作品.周作人写了《<沉沦>》《情诗》两篇文章,对其中的"不道德"嫌疑做了"辩护"性回应.这一回应,正是周作人以他所具备的现代性学思想对封建旧道德的一次回击.此后,周作人写了《<结婚的爱>》《蔼理斯的话》《"神交"与"情玩"》等多篇文章,对性学开启了全面系统的研究,涉及性道德、女子性本位、小孩性教育、两性关系、变性、变态性心理等诸多方面.周作人1922年这两次对"不道德"说法的回应,正是他性学系统研究的"先声".
Zhou Zuoren has long been concerned about the issue of sex,which could be traced back to his study in Jiangnan Naval Academy in 1902.After that,he went to Japan to study and had personal experience of modern sexology thought in Japan and the West.Returning to China in 1911 and joining Peking University in 1917,Zhou Zuoren's purchase of Western books increasingly involved modern sexuality works.In 1922,Yu Dafu's Sinking and Wang Jingzhi's Wind of Hui were criticized as"immoral"works because of their sexual writing.In this case,Zhou Zuoren made a"defensive"response to the suspicion of"immorality"in the two articles Sinking and Love Poem,which was actually a counterattack against feudal old morality with his modern sexuality thought.Zhou Zuoren wrote many articles such as Love of marriage,Words of Ailis,Spiritual Communication and Play of Emotion,etc.,conducting a comprehensive and systematic study on sexuality,involving sexual morality,women's sexual standard,children's sexual education,gender relations,transgender,abnormal sexual psychology and many other aspects.Zhou Zuoren's two responses to the"immoral"accusation in 1922 were the prelude to his systematic study of sexuality.
