Changes and Choices in the Format of Academic Journals Under the Influence of the New Cultural Movement
With the rise of the New Culture Movement and the increasing trend of Western learning spreading to the East, the choice between horizontal or vertical layout in Chinese publishing has become a topic of contention.During the 1920s and 1930s,academic journals had a relatively higher proportion of horizontal layout compared to newspapers and books. From a disciplinary perspective, natural science academic journals exhibit a higher proportion of horizontal layout, whereas social science academic journals show a lower proportion.Academic journals operated by universities,societies/associations,and other academic institutions varied in their choices between horizontal and vertical layout. From the perspective of the organizers, the horizontal and vertical proportions of academic journals sponsored by universities,colleges/associations,and other academic institutions vary. These differences are closely related not only to the varying attitudes of academic journal publishers towards the dissemination and exchange of Chinese and Western cultures under the influence of the New Culture Movement, but also to the pragmatic considerations of better expressing content such as formulas, calculations, charts, and Western letters, thereby promoting academic dissemination and exchange and facilitating integration into the international academic community. As practice has shown, this format change is conducive to the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures,as well as the cultivation and popularization of scientific thinking.
