The Impact of Housework Time on Chinese Women's Career Development:A Perspective of Vertical Mobility
Housework has long influenced women's career development.Using data from the"China Family Panel Studies"(CFPS)database, this study quantitatively analyzes the impact of increased housework time on Chinese women's career advancement from the perspective of vertical mobility. The results reveal that as domestic labor time increases,Chinese women face reduced career development opportunities and slower wage growth.Extended housework time has a significant negative effect on upward career mobility, posing a substantial barrier to women's professional development. The impact varies across different groups:women with lower educational levels are more negatively affected compared to highly educated women;women in eastern regions experience greater negative impacts than those in central and western regions;and urban women face more constraints from housework than their rural counterparts. While modern appliances offer limited direct substitution for housework, their use indirectly increases male participation in household tasks, alleviating the domestic burden on women.
