Either Faithful or Beautiful:A Brief Discussion on the Techniques of Poetry Translation——Taking Celan,Rilke, and Dickinson as Examples
Poetry is a spiritual product with contingency and inspiration, presenting characteristics of non-datalessness,non-practicality,and non-technicality,often difficult to translate. The imagery, artistic conception, and allusions that are difficult to convey and grasp in poetry translation not only record the"complex experience of understanding and emotion"that occurs in a moment of inspiration for the writing individual, but also contain the cultural and artistic aesthetic experience accumulated over thousands of years from the starting language. When translating literary works in different languages, translators may inevitably encounter issues such as literal translation or free translation, rhyme, translatability, dead translation or live translation.Poetry translation should strive to maintain the structure, style, and even charm of the original work to the greatest extent possible,stri-ving for spiritual fidelity, crossing the barriers of language and culture in a flexible way,and using the language system of the tar-get language as the criterion to transform the original poem, beautifully regenerate it,and touch the hearts of the target language audience.
