As one of the carriers reflecting climate change, the loess has recorded the major trajectories of the global climate system's variations in temperature and humidity. The loess region in the central mountains of Shandong province has the potential for discovering Paleolithic sites, which has also been gradually verified.Additionally, this area is characterized by an abundance of natural caves and river terraces with distinct levels. These Quaternary strata deposits form the foundation for discovering Paleolithic remains and conducting archaeological work.Through the continuous field work of archaeologists in the past 10 years, numerous sites of different stone tool development stages have been discovered since the late Pleistocene. In particular, the Bashan Site and Shuiquanyu Site in Yishui County are the most important ones. The consistency and coherence of their stratigraphic sequences, dating, and cultural development sequences clearly reproduce the continuous development of Paleolithic culture in this region since 100,000 years ago. This article organizes and evaluates the existing archaeological materials in the region, with a focus on the material analysis of recently discovered remains. It also proposes the potential for future work in each area based on practical experience and attempts to construct a macroscopic sequence of Paleolithic cultural development in the Shandong region.
