The Hua'ao Military Camp Site,situated on Hua'ao Island at the southern end of Gaotangdao Township in Xiangshan County,Ningbo,is a significant military facility site dating back to the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty in the southeastern coastal region.Supervised by Zhang Mingzhen and Zhang Huangyan,its construction commenced no later than the fourth year of Shunzhi(1647)and abandoned by the third year of Kangxi(1664).The investigation revealed that the site comprises two military camps,46 dwelling sites,two enclosures,one watchtower,and eight farmland areas covering over 1300 mu in total.Constructed with local timber and stones,the Hua'ao Military Camp Site boasts meticulous site selection,grand scale,thoughtful planning,and comprehensive facilities.Its self-contained military defense system serves as a valuable"specimen"for studying military camps and island defense systems during the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the southeastern coastal region of China.
