Charcoal damp-proof layers were discovered in the Haihun Marquis'tomb. In this paper, preliminary research was carried on the charcoal samples collected from the tomb passages and the mellow-soil second-tier platform.By analyzing the anatomical characteristics of the transverse, radial, and tangential sections of the wood collected,it was found that the samples correspond to wood of Quercus sect.Cerris.All the tree species in Quercus sect.Cerris are indigenous to Jiangxi province.Given the climatic characteristics and transportation conditions at that time,it can be inferred that those wood should be sourced locally. The choice of Quercus wood for preparing the damp-proof layers suggests that ancient people carefully considered the properties and availability of tree species before charcoal production.
