The Palaeolithic industry in the Bose Basin,Guangxi,South China is well known in the international scientific community for its handaxes and picks dating back to the early Middle Pleistocene.Since its discovery in 1973,more than 110 Palaeolithic sites have been identified,26 of which have been excavated with a total exposure of 24,000 m2.Hundreds of thousands of stone artifacts, including those unearthed from excavations(n=26,000)have been recovered.Stone workshops and traces of fire use have also been found. All these cultural remains have been dated from the Lower to the Upper Palaeolithic, covering a time span between 800ka and 10ka.Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of archaeologists,a series of academic problems involving the Palaeolithic archaeology in the Bose Basin have been solved, including the stratigraphic determination of stone artifacts, the dating of handaxes, the basic chronological framework. However, other issues, such as the criterion of a handaxe, absolute dating of the stone artifacts from all different stratigraphic layers, and the detailed chronological framework and phase division of the stone industry need to be resolved through more field work and further study.
