Research progress on the functions of SFXN family proteins and their roles in diseases
SFXN is a highly conserved multi-transmembrane mitochondrial protein in eukaryotes, belonging to the mitochondrial vector family. In human cells, the SFXN family comprises five proteins,i.e.,SFXN1~5,whose functions are closely related to iron homeostasis, amino acid metabolism, and tricarboxylic acid cycle. The expression abnormalities caused by SFXN gene mutations are closely related to the occurrence and development of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. This review mainly summarizes the localization, mitochondrial transport, and physiological functions of SFXN family proteins, and introduces the latest research progress about its roles in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and mitochondrial diseases.
