Changes and correlation analysis of cognitive function and apoptosis factors in children with epilepsy
Aim To study the changes and correlation of cognitive function and apoptosis factors in children with epilepsy. Methods A total of 150 children with epilepsy were selected as the epilepsy group, and were further divided into a mild group and a severe group based on the abnormality of their electroencephalograms.Meanwhile, another 150 healthy volunteers were selected as the control group. The scores of verbal intelligence quotient, performance intelligence quotient, and full-scale intelligence quotient,as well as the levels of apoptotic factors, including X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein(XIAP),pro-apoptotic gene Bim,Bcl-2-as-sociated X protein(Bax),Caspase-3,Caspase-4,and Caspase-9,were compared among the groups. The correlation between apop-totic factors and cognitive function was analyzed. Results Compared with the control group and the mild group, the epilepsy group and the severe group showed decreased scores in verbal intelligence quotient, performance intelligence quotient, and full-scale intelligence quotient,as well as decreased levels of XIAP,and increased levels of Bim,Bax,Caspase-3,Caspase-4,and Caspase-9(P<0.05).The children's VIQ,PIQ,and FSIQ scores were positively correlated with the levels of Bim,Bax,Caspase-3,Caspase-4,and Caspase-9,and negatively correlated with XIAP(P<0.05).Conclusion The levels of apoptotic factors in chil-dren with epilepsy were changed with the severity of electroencephalograms abnormalities and can serve as an important basis for predic-ting cognitive function.
