"Probability"and"Certainty"of the Open University in Leading the Development of Community Education for the Elderly
China has a large population and a rapidly aging process,which has highlighted the contradiction between the growing educational demand of the elderly population and the supply of elderly education.Resolving the contradiction between the increasing educational needs of the elderly and the supply of elderly education is an urgent task at present.Communities being social units for self-management and services for residents,community-based elderly education can enrich the spiritual and cultural lives of the elderly,improve their quality of life,and serves as an important way to build a harmonious society and achieve active aging.However,current community-based elderly education faces challenges such as the need to improve awareness,limited coverage,weak theoretical research,monotonous content formats,and the need to enhance the level of faculty and the information literacy of the elderly.Open universities,with the mission of promoting lifelong learning for all,have natural advantages in leading the development of community-based elderly education and can play a bridging role in seeking government support.Open universities should improve their educational systems,strengthen theoretical research,establish a team of faculty members combining professionals and retirees,develop a curriculum system for elderly education,and accelerate the digitization process to lead and promote community-based elderly education.
