Chinese and American River Literary Writing in the Context of Mutual Learning Among Civilizations:A Comparative Study of Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi and Xu Zechen's Northward
Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi and Xu Zechen's Northward are the representative works of glocalization in Chinese and American river literature.Focusing on occupational community on the river, both works complete the spatial construction of local identity by means of different narrative perspectives. The reverse river navigation in the above works indicates that whether it is the process of American outward-oriented cultural contact or the process of China's inward-oriented cultural acceptance, the author uses navigation maps to reproduce the evolution of the relationship between local society and world culture, conveying the visible and audible elements of modernization. The paper holds that the heterogeneous narrative of glocalization in the two works not only exposes the differences in thinking and value choices of writers from different countries when facing"local"and"global",but also highlights the importance of their thinking about the complex relationship among river history, river reality and river future beyond time and space, reflecting the value of mutual learning in civilization between Chinese and American river literature works.
