The Direct Effects and Mechanisms of Internet Use on Social Adaptation of the Elderly
Internet use has a significant impact on the social adaptation of elderly individuals. However, there is limited academic analysis regarding how and in what ways the internet use affects the social adaptation of the elderly.Additionally, most studies still focus on the internet technology itself, overlooking the"agency"of elderly individuals who are the users of this technology.Based on the data of 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey(CLASS2018)and referring to relevant classical theories, the results show that, compared with the elderly who do not use the internet, the elderly who use the internet have a higher level of social adapta-tion,and the more frequently the elderly use the Internet, the higher their level of social adaptation is.In ad-dition,social participation plays a positive mediating role in the influence of internet use on the social adapta-tion of the elderly. Therefore, achieving active aging not only requires encouraging the elderly to actively use the internet, promoting their digital integration, and eliminating the"digital divide".At the same time,it is necessary to use the internet to continuously increase the social participation of the elderly.
