The Impact of Self-perceived Ageism on Health and Life Expectancy of the Elderly
Multistate Markov model is used to analyze the effects of self-perceived ageism on health and life expectancy of the elderly. The female, urban, uneducated elderly group have a higher level of self-perceived ageism. With the aging process, their self-perceived ageism becomes more severe.Ageism has a significant negative effect on the health and life expectancy of the elderly population, mainly in that ageism increases the probability of transition from health to disability, and weakens the probability of transition from disability to health recovery.Ageism reduces the life expectancy and healthy life expectancy of the elderly, and is more significant among the male, urban, educated elderly group.Reducing age discrimination against older persons is an important task in promoting active ageing. We need to build an age-friendly society in which everyone can participate and share, promote the health of older persons through enhanced age inclusion.
