Ethnic Group:A Key Element of Research on American Population and Society
Racial/ethnic issues are the first element in the study of American population and society,and they are also a key for Chinese people to understand the external world,especially the national/electoral conditions of the United States.This article reviews the profiles of Native Americans,Whites,African Americans,His-panics,and Asians as racial and ethnic groups in the United States since the second half of the 20th century.Diversity/pluralism trends and contemporary practices resulting from the historical evolution of race relations models are discussed.Special problems faced by major ethnic groups,as well as the achievements and contro-versies of equal rights/affirmative action(DEI/AA)policies for the minorities are investigated.These are of great significance to understanding the characteristics of the American population and society.
