Research on the Impact of Digital Economy on Urban Carbon Emissions:Effects and Mechanisms
As a new engine to promote high-quality economic development, the digital economy is the core driving force to achieve the"dual carbon"goal.Based on the panel data of 270 prefec-ture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020,this paper analyzes the effect and mechanisms of the digital economy on urban carbon emission on the basis of measuring the development level of urban digital economy. The results show that the digital economy significantly reduces urban carbon emis-sion,and this conclusion is still valid after the endogeneity and robustness tests such as instrumental variable,difference-difference,alternative explanatory variables, and placebo test. The intermediary mechanism tests find that improving the upgrading of industrial structure and technological innovation levels are the two basic paths through which the digital economy significantly suppresses urban carbon emission. The heterogeneity analysis and panel threshold effect analysis show that the impact of digital economy on carbon emission is more significant in the eastern region and non-resource endowment re-gion,and the effect of digital economy on urban carbon emission is also affected by the urban scale, showing a single threshold effect, and an inverted"U"feature of first promotion and then inhibition.
