Making a Double:The Self-Crisis and Separation Imagination of the Modern Subject
"Making a double(doppelganger)"is a popular imagination in modern society when individuals grapple with self-crisis.In early modernity, this imagination manifested as the ethi-cal subjects splitting themselves, while in late modernity,it manifested as the achievement subjects replicating themselves. In the 19th century, protagonists in Victorian romantic literature sought to separate their evil side.In contrast,in science fiction movies since the mid-20th century,protago-nists sought to clone themselves to serve their original selves. The ethical subjects of early modernity used split personality to make a double to maintain their stability.Psychoanalysts viewed this as a defense mechanism in a repressive social environment, but it often led individuals to their final de-struction.On the other hand, the achievement subjects of late modernity used media technologies like gene cloning and mind uploading to make a double, using, exploiting, and even enslaving them to maintain their openness. While separating oneself from another self may seem advantageous,it ul-timately proves challenging to escape the entanglement and backlash of the double. The doppelgang-er narrative in popular culture exposes the myth of modern individuals regarding"self-separation."When faced with an oversaturated and fragmented sense of self,the"self-separation strategy"adopt-ed by individuals can only temporarily alleviate, but not completely resolve, the identity anxiety and crisis experienced by modem subjects.
