Reconnecting social thoughts with scholarship in media sociology
As an interdisciplinary field, media sociology is in constant need of defining and redefining itself. This essay employs"concentric circles"to capture the institutional and intellectual state of media sociology and stimulate dialogues at the theoretical, methodological, and topical levels. It then compares two entries in an encyclopedia of communication and a sociology handbook, revealing the inherent tension between different disciplinary perspectives or approaches to media sociology. This essay ends with a brief discussion on reconnecting social thought and scholarship in media sociology to retrieve live scholarship from thought, continuously problematize classics and their assumptions, and examine the intertwining of media's social logic and society's media logic.
