Application of peritoneal dialysis in the treatment of acute and critical illnesses
Peritoneal dialysis(PD)and haemodialysis(HD)are two renal replacement therapies with different princi-ples,both used in the treatment of end-stage renal disease(ESRD)and acute kidney injury(AKI).Continuous renal re-placement therapy(CRRT),derived from HD,has become an essential technique in intensive care due to its reliable life-supporting capabilities.PD has been under-utilized compared to HD in the treatment of AKI and other critical illnesses, but this situation is changing significantly.Numerous studies have shown that PD offers unique advantages in the treatment of AKI and refractory heart failure.Direct peritoneal resuscitation(DPR),a relatively simple mode of PD,effectively corrects microcirculatory disturbances in the abdominal cavity and has become an important resuscitation technique in critical care. The PD technique, which integrates the functions of DPR and CRRT,has a promising potential in the field of critical care.
