Zhou Chun's Essays on Reading The Dream of the Red Chamber embodied the scholarly ideals and read-ing ecosystem of bibliophiles during the Qianjia period.The early readers surrounding Essays on Reading The Dream of the Red Chamber were mostly Zhou Chun's fellow townspeople,relatives,and peers,forming a unique community for the reading and study of popular fiction.Influenced by the scholarly atmosphere of the Qianjia period,Zhou Chun ap-plied the methods of textual criticism and historical inquiry to novels,forming his unique paradigm of interpretation.The exchange and dissemination of books among his fellow townspeople and peers made Western Zhejiang a prominent cen-ter for the reading and study of The Dream of the Red Chamber,with Zhou Chun's interpretative method becoming a prominent"school".By examining the origins of his interpretative method and ideas,analyzing the successes and fail-ures of his academic philosophy,and understanding the literary and ideological tendencies,we can further explore the reading and study methods of bibliophiles and philologists during this period,as well as the influence of popular fiction on the core issues of academic and literary discourse at the time.
