The Evolution and Influence of Suxing Yemei Zhen in the Joseon Dynasty of Korea
Suxing Yemei Zhen(夙兴夜寐箴)is a maxim written by Chen Bai during the Song Dynasty about reading, studying and self-cultivation.During the Yuan,Ming, and Qing dynasties,it was regarded as a code of conduct for learning and regimen. After being introduced to the Korean Peninsula during the Joseon Dynasty,it was highly valued by Confucian scholars such as Lu Shoushen,Li Huang and Li Er,who incorporated it as an important practical method for cultivating moral learning in various ways.During the reign of Yeongjo, the maxim was used in court lectures and in the education of the crown prince, serving as a means for King Yeongjo and his officials to elucidate principles of self-cultivation and social conduct.Unlike in the Yuan,Ming, and Qing dynasties, where the text remained a collection of maxims, during the Joseon Dynasty,it underwent a transformation from mere"admonitions"to a method for moral cultivation, reflecting both the significant influence of Confucian culture in the Joseon Dynasty and the unique political and cultural context of the era.
