The Translation of Archaeological Works by the Commercial Press and the Development of Archaeology in China(1897-1949)
In the early 20th century,modern European archaeology was introduced to China with the expedition teams sent to China by foreign colonial powers.By the 1920s,the Chinese archaeological institutions began to indepen-dently conduct scientific archaeological excavations,marking the formal birth of modem archaeology in China.During the emergence of Chinese archaeology,the Commercial Press,as a publishing institution,not only published traditional Chinese epigraphy works but also translated and published European and Japanese archaeological works,including ar-chaeological theories,methodologies,and achievements,providing valuable references for the development of modem archaeology in China.
