The Story of"Nezha Conquering the Dragon King":Narrative Evolution and Its Cultural Implications
The story of"Nezha Conquering the Dragon King"originated from the legend of Nezha returning the bones to his father and the flesh to his mother,as well as the legend of the Great Sage Nezha slaying the dragon, during the Song and Liao Dynasties.During the Ming Dynasty,Nezha's identity transitioned from a guardian deity in Bud-dhism to Lingzhu Zi(a sky pearl)in Taoism, reflecting the fusion of Buddhism and Taoism in the story. In the Qing Dy-nasty,adaptations gradually weakened the religious aspects of the story.Analyzed through the lens of Chinese narrative culture,we can see that the theme of the story underwent a transformation from religious to secular, reflecting the en-hancement of the literary aspect of Buddhist stories during the sinicization of Buddhism,as well as the progression of secularization driven by the decline of Buddhist doctrines.
