The Phenomenon Concerning the Clan Name in the E State and the Returning Burial of Dowry Wares in the Spring and Autumn Period:A Perspective from the Inscriptions on the E Hou Hu Unearthed from the Tomb at Xiaxiangpu
E Hou Hu(鄂侯壶,a pot named after the Lord of E State)unearthed from the tomb M19 at Xiaxiangpu(夏饷铺)provided important evidence for judging the clan lineage of E state(鄂国)in the Spring and Autumn Period. The examination of accompanying concubinage from a different family name in the Zhou Dynasty revealed that E Hou Hu was made for his own daughter instead of others through its inscription, and reflected the fact that the clan lineage of E state in the Spring and Autumn Period had the family name Ji.E Hou Hu was also one of the cases of the bronze dowry wares buried in the tomb of its maker, which was commonly found in southern vassal states during the Spring and Autumn period. This cultural phenomenon was not only a reflection of the strong ties between the married woman and her father's clan, but also a need for the vassal states at that time to develop their own power by strengthening their alli-ances through wedding and funeral activities.
