Liang Fangzhong's Research on the Yitiaobian Taxation System in the Ming Dynasty
Liang Fangzhong was an important pioneer in the study of Chinese socio-economic history and an expert in the study of socio-economic history during the Ming Dynasty,particularly renowned for his research on the Yitiaobian taxation system(一条鞭法,One Lash Taxation Method).His research on the Yitiaobian taxation system has been consis-tent throughout his academic career,exploring it from both institutional and historical perspectives.By combining the documentary records of the Yitiaobian taxation system with its practical implementation,he attempted to trace the ori-gins and development of the system,investigating its complex manifestations at the local and central levels.He estab-lished a modern academic system for studying the Yitiaobian taxation system,emphasizing the interpretation of its socio-economic implications and advocating for a broader interpretation of socio-economic history to replace traditional politi-cal institutional narratives.He extensively utilized historical sources,with particular attention to local chronicles and other regional historical materials.Liang Fangzhong's approach and methodology in studying the Yitiaobian taxation system not only brought new insights to the study of ancient Chinese economic history,but also had significant implica-tions for the localized study of Chinese economic history.
