On the Rise and Fall of"Shi-style Prose"from the Han to Jin Dynasties
"Shi-style prose"(势体文)was originally designated as a treatise on calligraphy.Against the backdrop of the maturity of calligraphic and literary genres, and the flourishment of calligraphic and literary theories,Shi-style prose had grown steadily and finally reached its zenith from the late Eastern Han to West Jin Dynasties. As the product of the development of early calligraphy and literature,Shi-style prose distinctly reflected not only the improvement of calligra-phy art and the consciousness of calligraphy aesthetics, but also the progress of the awareness of literary styles and theo-ries.Additionally,we can get a glimpse of the influence of variations in calligraphy styles and competitions between liter-ary genres through the history of flourishment to decline of Shi-style prose, thereby providing reasonable explanations and references for the vicissitude of"artistic"literary genres in medieval China.
