The Historical Writing and Evolution of Narrative Discourse by the Daonan School
The Daonan School(道南学派)was a crucial link in the development of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism.Zhu Xi compiled Er Cheng Wai Shu(《二程外书》)and first used the phrase"Wu Dao Nan Yi"(my ideas will be dis-seminated southwards)to describe Yang Shi.After the authority of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism was established,a paradigmatic narrative emerged, tracing the lineage from Yang Shi to Luo Congyan, then to Li Tong, and finally to Zhu Xi.Initially,Daonan discourse was Zhu Xi's way of tracing his academic lineage, constructing the transmission of the orthodox way.Zhu Xi's followers upheld the principles of his philosophy, recognizing the Daonan School's role in pre-serving the orthodoxy, transforming academic lineage into a genealogical orthodoxy, and imbuing it with the significance of defending and maintaining the tradition. With the expansion of gentry culture and the intensification of debates over the Confucian orthodoxy, the Daonan School was also reconstructed by scholars as a representative of regional culture. It evolved from an academic bridge linking Luoyang and Fujian into the foundational pillar of Fujian Confucianism.
