A Study on the"Xin-Jun Isomorphism"Reasoning in Guanzi
Guanzi(《管子》)is a comprehensive and eclectic work, encompassing ideas from various schools of thought. It is an important text for studying pre-Qin culture and Chinese intellectual history. The concept of"isomor-phism"is prominently featured in the reasoning and argumentation practices within Guanzi. This mode of thinking not only reflects an essential cognitive method used by the ancient Chinese to acquire new knowledge from external experi-ences,but also serves as a persuasive argumentation approach in the specific cultural context of ancient China. The rea-soning of"Xin-Jun isomorphism"(心君同构)stems from the ancient recognition of the central political significance of the"jun"(ruler 君).By searching the existing knowledge base for something that holds a similarly"core"position in its respective field, such as the"xin"(heart/mind 心),ancient thinkers used the analogous structure between the"jun"and the"xin"to infer that the authoritative status of the"xin"could likewise apply to the"jun".In other words, this reason-ing draws on the authoritative status of the"xin"to justify the authority of the ruler, thereby providing a rationale for the state governance principles advocated by the authors of Guanzi.
