When Will the Resistance Become Intense——A Qualitative Comparative Analysis within 33 Cases from the Perspective of Protesters
When will the form of resistance intensity become serious?Existing research is difficult to answer such a ques-tion due to the lack of comparison of forms of resistance with different levels of intensity. Therefore, from the perspective of pro-testers,through qualitative comparative analysis of 33 cases,it is the binary path that leads to intense protests. One is an internal-driven mode that takes the strong demands of protesters as a necessary condition. The resistance intensity tends to become serious when protesters have strong demands, positive perceptions of government attitudes, and low levels of organization;or,when protesters have strong demands, negative perceptions of government attitudes while the number of people is large enough;or,when protesters have strong demands and high levels of organization while belonging to low social classes. The other is an external-infection model based on external emotional infection, driven by the demands of the protesters themselves. The intense resistance can also probably occur when there are numerous protesters from lower social classes but with loose organization or poor perception to the government's attitude. These findings are helpful for not only filling the gaps in existing theories, but also providing intellectual supports for decision-making.
