Three Issues on the Examination of Zhang Yue's Deeds
This paper examines three nuanced aspects of Zhang Yue's deeds. The first is an analysis of his early critique of Yang Jiong's oppressive governance. The second concerns the duration of his literary appointment. The third investigates the timing of his tenure as the official in charge of the imperial examinations. His countermeasure essays and the work Farewell to Yang Yingchuan Jiong Proverbs reflect a continuation of his articulation of governance principles. While earlier scholars de-scribed Zhang Yue's literary leadership as spanning"thirty years",this is likely a literary expression, with the actual period be-ing closer to twenty years.Regarding Zhang Yue's tenure overseeing the imperial examinations, three different accounts exist in the historical record.Based on a comparison of available sources, this paper supports the interpretation that his tenure began in the first year of the Chang'an era.
