The Spiritual Machine or the Magic of Life—The Philosophical Debate on Technology between Ellul and Deleuze
Contemporary philosophy of technology is generally experiencing a turn towards experience and materiality. However, this seems to largely overlook the seemingly ancient yet still highly relevant issue of the relationship between technology and spirit.Discussions on the spirituality of technology in the contemporary context can roughly be divided into three dominant directions.First, thinkers like Muir and Nussbaum return to ancient Greece to rethink the intrinsic con-nection between technology and the spirit of tragedy.Second, philosophers like Ellul confront the current technological so-ciety,profoundly critiquing various spiritual technologies and spiritual machines, while attempting to respond to and trans-form them through an uprooting force.Third, there is the concept of magic, which is deeply elaborated by Deleuze. This concept not only closely associates spirituality with interiority but also reopens two paths rich in uprooting implications—causal rupture and profound energy—through reinterpretations of numerous mystical texts.
