The Utility Evaluation of the Maize-Soybean Relay Strip Intercropping System:A Dual-Case Study Based on Short-term Cost Theory
There is no shortage of staple food grains except for soybeans in China's grain produc-tion.Hence the revitalization of soybean production is of great significance to the maintenance of food security and social stability in the country. This paper uses an exploratory multi-case study method fo-cusing on the maize-soybean relay strip intercropping technology implemented in two areas in Sichuan Province. The paper explores the variation trend and deduction law of output and competitiveness in dif-ferent development stages of production based on short-term cost theory of microeconomics. The research finds that productions in case areas are both at the first stage and have not reached the maxi-mum yield.Increasing inputs can simultaneously improve the yield and cost competitive advantage.How-ever,after entering the second phase of the production, yield increase will bring higher costs and lower returns to farmers.Based on that, this paper proposes to focus on the balance between yield and cost ad-vantage in order to better achieve food security and protect people's livelihood.
