Tea was the bulk commodity exported from Fujian in late Qing Dynasty. In the Wuxu period,Fujian, which failed in the competition of international tea market with India and Ceylon, started to conform to the trend of the times, introduced new methods and reformed the tea industry. In order to improve the quality of original tea,Fujian tried to introduce new varieties of tea bushes, reform the cultivation technique. It produced tea which met European and American importing standards and the market requirement by means of establishing joint stock companies and purchasing machines.Fujian also wanted to improve the competitiveness and retrieved the economic right through reducing the tax and lowering the export price. After the Wuxu Coup in 1898,the reform measures of Fujian tea industry were suspended or even abolished.During the period of the new policy in the late Qing Dynasty,Fujian tea industry restarted the reformation. However, limited by the system, most of the reformation could only rest on the paper, and the revitalization of Fujian tea industry was not realized.
