Research on the Distribution of Shetian and Changes in Cultivation System in Lingnan Region During the Ming and Qing Dynasties
The history of Shetian in Lingnan region is long,with continuous development throughout the ages.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties,the distribution of Shetian in Lingnan region was very common and reached its peak.There were more types of crops planted in Shetian than before.The farming system also evolved to multiple harvest per year,intercropping,and a shift from fallow farming to continuous cultivation.The application of fertilization and the emergence of tools for field manage-ment and tillage marked the development of Shetian to the stage of intensive cultivation.In addition,most of the six terraced fields in Guangdong and the nine terraced fields in Guangxi evolved from Shetian during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The Shetian in Lingnan region during the Ming and Qing Dynasties played a crucial role in carrying forward the past and ushering in the future,occupying an important position in its agricultural development history.It also has reference and significance for the agricultural development and rural revitalization in Lingnan region today.
