Investigation on the Production Management of Betel Nut During the Qing Dynasty in Hainan:Discussion on the"Fengguan Shijin"Stele in the Qing Dynasty in Yazhou of Hainan
Betel nut is s one of the"Four Southern Medicines"in China,which has various medicinal values.The climate is hot and humid in Hainan Island,where has been an important planting area for betel nut since Han Dynasty.Betel nut has been cultivated and managed in Hainan Island for over two thousand years,which has had a profound impact on the ancient socio-e-conomic development.Betel nut cultivation not only has increased local financial revenue,but also promoted changes in indus-trial structure.The"Fengguan Shijin"stele,erected in the 24th year of the Qing Dynasty's Daoguang reign(1844),recorded pro-hibition on theft,early picking of betel nuts,and robbing of betel nut and other properties in Yazhou and Ganen counties.It is a rare material for studying the production,operation,and management of betel nuts in Hainan during the Qing Dynasty.It has im-portant value for understanding economy development,historical culture,social management in ancient Hainan.
