The Impacts of NATO's"Pivot to the Asia-Pacific"on the ASEAN Centrality
In recent years, the development of"Global NATO"has instrumentalized NATO and promoted its pivot to the Asia-Pacific region, showing distinctive characteristics of focusing on the"China Challenge"to serve the U.S.'s strate-gic transformation, uniting key alliances in the Asia-Pacific to increase regional tensions, and strictly adhering to the"Eu-rope First and Asia Second"principle to limit NATO's strategic transformation. The NATO's pivot to the Asia-Pacific region has spread the group's political ideology, intensified regional power confrontation, and increased the complexity of regional hot issues, thereby threatening ASEAN's open regionalism, the effectiveness of its external coordination mechanism, and its agenda-setting space, which finally damaged the conceptual and institutional foundations for the ASEAN centrality, making ASEAN adhere to the"neutral and balancing"stance, promote deeper economic cooperation, and strengthen national de-fense and military coordination to maintain its leading role in regional affairs.Looking into the future,China could fully grasp the logic of NATO's pivot to the Asia-Pacific region and its impacts on ASEAN,strengthen mutual trust and coopera-tion with ASEAN,support the ASEAN centrality in regional affairs, and maintain communication with NATO and its mem-ber states, thus contribute to the stability of regional and international security order.
